Many card printers are designed to be modular and upgradable. To see which upgrades are available for your printer, please check the manufacturer’s data sheet or the “Options” section of the product detail page.

Here are some examples of upgrades:

  • Chip encoder (contact/contactless):ᅠThis allows the card printer to encode chip cards, which are commonly used for transit, payment and loyalty applications.

A retransfer ID card printer is a type of printer that uses a two-step process to print images onto ID cards. In the first step, the printer prints an image onto a thin film. In the second step, the film is transferred onto the ID card, using heat and pressure.

Retransfer ID card printers offer a number of advantages over other types of ID card printers, including:

  • High-quality images:ᅠRetransfer printers produce high-quality images that are resistant to fading and scratching.
  • Durable cards:ᅠRetransfer printers produce durable cards that can withstand wear and tear.
  • Wide range of applications:ᅠRetransfer printers can be used to print a wide range of ID cards, including employee ID cards, student ID cards, access control cards, and loyalty cards.
  • Easy to use:ᅠRetransfer printers are easy to use and maintain.
  • Over-the-edge printing:ᅠRetransfer printers can print images that extend to the edges of the card, which gives the cards a professional look.
  • Support for a variety of card materials:ᅠRetransfer printers can print on a variety of card materials, including PVC, PET, and magnetic stripe cards.
  • Built-in card reader and writer:ᅠRetransfer printers often have built-in card readers and writers, which makes it easy to encode cards with data such as names, employee ID numbers, and access codes.

Overall, retransfer ID card printers are a versatile and reliable option for businesses and organizations that need to print high-quality, durable, and secure ID cards.

To make an informed decision about your card printer, consider these key factors.

Firstly, assess your printing volume requirements. If you anticipate a high printing volume, look for a printer with robust capabilities and high-capacity card input/output hoppers.

Secondly, consider the types of cards you’ll be printing. Common card types are: PVC, ABS, PET, PET-G, PC; 85.6 x 53.98mm (ISO ID-1/CR-80 size). If you want to encode smart chips or magnetic stripes, check if the printer can be upgraded with the desired encoding modules. Operating system compatibility and a user-friendly card design software are also important to consider.

If you need further assistance or have specific questions, please contact us and we’ll be happy to provide detailed guidance.

Both are used to print ID cards, but through different methods.

A retransfer printer uses a two-step process to print images onto ID cards. In the first step, the printer prints an image onto a thin film. In the second step, the film is transferred onto the ID card, using heat and pressure. This process results in high-quality, durable ID cards that are resistant to fading and scratching.

A direct-to-card printer prints directly onto the ID card, using a thermal or inkjet print head. This process is faster than retransfer printing, but the results are not as good.

Here’s a quick comparison of their features:

  • Image quality: Retransfer printers produce high-quality images that are resistant to fading and scratching. Direct-to-card printers produce medium-quality images that can fade or scratch more easily.
  • Durability: Retransfer printers produce durable cards that can withstand wear and tear. Direct-to-card printers produce less durable cards that are more susceptible to damage.
  • Speed: Retransfer printers are slower than direct-to-card printers.
  • Cost: Retransfer printers are more expensive than direct-to-card printers.
  • Applications: Retransfer printers are ideal for high-security ID cards, loyalty cards, and membership cards. Direct-to-card printers are ideal for low-security ID cards, event passes, and badges.

Ultimately, the best type of printer for you will depend on your specific needs. If you need high-quality, durable ID cards, a retransfer printer is a good option. If you need a faster printer for low-security applications, a direct-to-card printer is a good option.
